Here's the uncomfortable truth: most of them mean nothing. The cleaning-product industry is largely unregulated when it comes to marketing claims. A bottle labelled "natural" can contain whatever the manufacturer wants. "Green" is a colour, not a certification. "Eco-friendly" is what the marketing team picked at the meeting that morning.
For a homeowner trying to figure out whether the products coming into their home are actually safe — or whether a cleaning company's "eco-friendly" pitch is substantive or marketing — this is a real problem.

"Eco-friendly," "natural," "green" — none of these are regulated
In Canada (and the US), there's no legal definition of "natural" or "eco-friendly" for cleaning products. A manufacturer can put either word on a bottle that contains harsh surfactants, undisclosed fragrance chemicals, or aggressive solvents. There's no audit, no enforcement, no standard.
This is called greenwashing — using environmental-sounding language to make conventional products feel safer than they are. It's everywhere in the cleaning industry, including with companies that promote themselves as eco-friendly.
The terms that do have some teeth:
- EPA Safer Choice — US program with actual ingredient review
- EcoLogo / UL ECOLOGO — Canadian/UL-certified, independently audited
- Green Seal — independent third-party certification
These tell you a product met a specific bar, but even certified products don't always disclose every ingredient. "Certified" is a starting point, not the finish line.
What "non-toxic" actually means
"Non-toxic" isn't a feel-good word — it has a real meaning rooted in chemical safety:
- No ingredients classified as hazardous by global regulatory bodies (WHMIS in Canada, CLP in Europe)
- No carcinogens, mutagens, or reproductive toxicants (the so-called "CMR" substances)
- No ingredients known to cause respiratory irritation at normal-use concentrations
- No undisclosed fragrance chemicals — "fragrance" or "parfum" on a label can hide dozens of unlisted compounds, many of which are sensitizers

- Uses products with transparent ingredient lists (no proprietary blends)
- Doesn't rely on bleach, ammonia, or quaternary ammonium compounds ("quats") as primary actives
- Avoids synthetic fragrances
- Works through a combination of mild plant-based surfactants, mechanical action (microfibers, agitation), enzymes, and mild acids/bases like vinegar, baking soda, or hydrogen peroxide

Common questions

"Natural" is a marketing word, not a safety guarantee. "Non-toxic" — with a definition rooted in actual chemical hazard classification — is the relevant standard.
Can I do non-toxic cleaning myself? Absolutely. White vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, mild plant-based dish soap, and a good supply of microfiber cloths cover roughly 90% of household cleaning. The case for hiring a service is convenience, time, and consistency — not access to special products.
Does "no harsh chemicals" mean less effective cleaning? This is the most common misconception. Effective cleaning is about three things: the right surfactant for the soil type, mechanical action, and time. Bleach and quats are bacteriostatic and feel "strong," but they don't actually clean better — they just kill bacteria, which isn't the same thing as removing dirt. For removing actual dirt, a good plant-based surfactant plus a microfiber cloth outperforms most chemical-heavy approaches.
